I’m very sorry but we, the Bahamas, would appear to be a nation of morons, who seem unable to read and have a television to watch only advertisements.
How else can the ludicrous statements carried on the news concerning the withdrawal of plastic bags be explained?
Surprise was expressed that supermarkets no longer supplied these bags, notwithstanding we have been advised, ad nauseum, for at least the last year, and probably longer, that plastic bags would no longer be available to pack our groceries, with effect from 1st. January, 2020.
The fact that government is allowing a six-month grace period allowing stores to provide these bags, but with a 25cent fee, appears to be totally lost on our people.
Incidentally that 25cents is a penalty to remind us that we need, in future, to bring our own shopping bag to carry our produce and that these one-use plastic bags will finally disappear completely from stores on the 1st. July, 2020.
By the way, there is nothing new under the sun, as a child I can remember going to the food-store with my mother, and later as a young newly-wed with new wife, carrying our own shopping bags.
There was, also, a news segment of a school-girl who, to her great credit, was actively helping to clean beaches, but had wondered how she would now be taking her gym shoes and kit to school with no plastic bags. May I suggest she do the same as I did, I had a leather satchel for school books and a cloth bag for gym gear.
H. Armbrister, who is not as young as he used to be!
