The leader of the Opposition PLP, Mr. Brave Davis is up to typical political mischief making with the straw market again attempting to provide political cover for tenants that have allegedly not paid their rent.
The straw market has a long sordid history of being used as a political football. More here...
Mr. Davis suggested the government should be more sensitive to the cries of the straw vendors, whom he calls the "backbone of our tourism product". One assumes this means allow them to be delinquent.
The financial hardships people face in this very slow economy are real and I could applaud Mr. Davis if he was personally paying the back rent of the vendors or helping them in do so in some tangible way other than to encourage more abuse of the public purse.
Does he even know or care to determine what courtesies might have been extended before the landlord took action?
But like the Government buying a failing hotel in Grand Bahama for political reasons, it's par for the political course that pushes the Bahamas further in the wrong economic direction.
Statism is the problem, not the solution.
