Dear Mr. Editor,
I have to ask the Honourable leader of the Opposition, if he has actually listened to himself recently?
Sir, you are sounding more and more pathetic in your futile attempts to find serious fault with Dr. Minnis and his FNM Party presently in power; your latest lambasting of the Prime Minister about corruption is a classic case in point. You wonder about fictitious World Leaders saying the Bahamas is losing half a billion dollars to corruption annually. Actually no such leader is saying anything of the sort, Dr. Minnis was merely reporting what has been set as a norm that any national economy can potentially expect to lose between 5% and 10% to corruption in any form.
Mr. Davis appeared aghast at the half a billion dollar figure that was mentioned, but let us explore that figure a moment and take a single area where corruption does take place – foreign travel.
Let us assume the population of the Bahamas at 300,000, let us further assume all 300,000 take one trip abroad in a year and, again, assume upon their return each person “fudges” their Custom’s declaration to save him or herself $5 in duty charges, now work out what that means; Customs – and by extension, the Bahamian people – lose $1,500,000 each year! Mr. Davis I’m quite sure you may now appreciate and acknowledge that neither Dr. Minnis’ first figure of $200,000,000 nor the second figure, $500,000,000, are, in fact, outside the realms of possibility.
Perhaps, Mr. Davis, I could ask you to refrain from any further acts of “foot in mouth” so beloved of your erstwhile leader and law partner.
Sincerely
Bahamas Beach Boy
