The older I get the more frustrated I get with political spin and I am even more disappointed that Mr. Chester Cooper, Opposition Shadow Finance Minister would engage in it.
In a recent letter in The Punch he rightly states that the FNM Government has a duty to inform the public of the "status and contents of" forensic audits in government agencies.
But then he goes on to suggest that the "FNM government has a trend of reneging on campaign pledges it realises were ill-judged now that it is struggling to govern."
Let me see if I understand correctly? The FNM's promises to govern with transparency and accountability were "ill-judged"?
How can this be? Promises to be accountable and transparent are "ill-judged"? Well blow me down.
Does this mean if he has the opportunity to be Finance Minister he would not see the need to be accountable and transparent? If tax dollars are extracted from the taxpayers and expended without transparency and accountability we end up with politicians and bureaucrats doing what they allegedly did under the last administration. A political entity that Mr. Cooper represents.
Hopefully Mr. Cooper made a mistake and will clarify this so Bahamians might have a better understanding of what he meant to say.
If politicians were using their personal funds they can do what they like. But when spending money taken from the taxpayer there is an obvious requirement to be accountable and transparent.
Political spin is expected from some politicians, but I did not expect it from Mr. Cooper.
