Health Minister Dr. Duane Sands has reportedly advised that "A revised, leaner and more effective National Health Insurance (NHI) program that combines primary care and catastrophic care will be re-launched before the end of the year."
He made three substantial declarations:
- “The most significant issue is the sustainability of the program is relative to resources.”
- “We will not commit the Bahamian public to a program that creates additional red ink and a financial burden for the public.
- “We also are not interested in a program that does not impact in a very real way, the health challenges that exist."
These are important positions for the Minister to stake out as nationalised health care systems end up being unsustainable, and create fiscal deficits while burdening the health system even more than it already is.
Now the question becomes what taxes will Bahamians have to pay for it?
