So the garish celebration called the Speech From The Throne is over and the broad parameters are set for almost every government ministry, department and agency. A wish list perhaps?
Having said that, some very positive lines were offered up on accountability, the rule of law, term limits, a boundaries commission, an ombudsman and support for the auditor general.
There were far too many generalities but maybe that can be chalked up to the euphoria caused by winning the election with a landslide.
Possibly after a few more weeks in office, when the gravity of the fiscal and economic condition of the country really set in will there be a more realistic presentation on what the taxpayer might expect?
After watching a limited segment of the reading of the Speech From The Throne, it baffles the mind that we continue with such a show. When will we give up all the symbolism?
Many of us balk at the symbolic trappings associated with being a member of the British Commonwealth, yet mimic them in ultimate detail for this? I don’t get it.
Do you think the reality is that politics can’t help oversell things like this as more important than anything else?
Rather than block a main thoroughfare for two days and spend thousands upon thousands of dollars this way the government could have said we’re cutting back on unnecessary expenditure until we turn the country around so we're scaling this event back.
As politically important as the Speech From The Throne is, tuning it down would have sent a powerful message of reform.
