On Friday night we had the privilege to see Damon Johnson live at the Pirate Republic Brewing Company on Prince George Wharf, and what a performance it was.
We were mesmerized with some of the finest acoustic guitar playing ever with a fabulous voice and set list. Damon pours his heart and soul into his performances.
Besides his excellent portfolio of songs he wrote or co-wrote, like Leave It All Behind, Release, Better Days Will Come At Last and Pontiac, he also played Greg Allman's Melissa and Jimi Hendrix' The Wind Cries Mary to name just a couple.
One of the best live performances I've ever seen by a solo artist with nothing more than his voice and guitar. Just incredible.
Thanks to Pirate Republic Brewing for having him.
Here's Damon's bio from his Facebook Page:
“Damon Johnson is an American guitarist, vocalist, entertainer and songwriter from Geraldine, Alabama (current resident of Nashville, TN), best known for his work as frontman for Brother Cane, guitarist for Alice Cooper and Thin Lizzy, and currently as guitarist for Black Star Riders. Johnson's list of other writing and recording credits include John Waite, Stevie Nicks, Carlos Santana, Sammy Hagar, Queensryche, Faith Hill, Skid Row, and The Temptations. He has also been a member of several high profile side projects, including Whiskey Falls and Slave To The System.
“Johnson first came on the national music scene as the frontman, guitarist and principal songwriter for Brother Cane. The band released three albums on Virgin Records (selling a cumulative of over 500,000 records) that would yield three #1 singles on rock radio ("Got No Shame," "And Fools Shine On," and "I Lie in the Bed I Make"). Brother Cane toured extensively as a headliner and also as a supporting act on tours by Van Halen, Aerosmith, Robert Plant, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Candlebox. The group disbanded in 1999.
“Johnson has also issued two solo acoustic albums: "Dust" (2000) and "Release" (2010), featuring his daughter, Sarah, on two songs and a cover of Alice Cooper's "Generation Landslide" (featuring Cooper himself on harmonica and some vocals). Johnson and frontman Ricky Warwick are principal songwriters for Black Star Riders, who's 2013 debut was titled All Hell Breaks Loose. The band's sophomore album is scheduled for release in February 2015."
