Few people know the publisher of The Punch newspaper was quite a cricket player in England during the 1970’s and it’s about time he gets some recognition for it.
Playing for Worcestershire, one of the great cricket teams of the 1960’s and 1970’s, Johnson more than held his own, and as a “former professional English cricketer who played for Worcestershire from 1972 to 1975." "Johnson also topped the batting averages for the Young England Under-19 cricket team on a tour of West Indies in 1972.”
Here’s a nice article about Mr. Johnson and his team providing more insight into his cricket career.
Mr. Johnson is a Bahamian sports icon, and a very successful entrepreneur who deserves his photo at the airport like other Bahamian sports stars.
A big question that comes to mind, is why he has not been recognised after all these years? Could it be because he takes on the political class and their transgressions in his newspaper?
As we know, Cabinet must approve these honours, so maybe they're blocking it? But surely they would be above such pettiness?
How about starting a put Ivan Johnson in the Bahamas Sports Hall of Fame and place his picture at the airport alongside our many other sports icons movement?
