When reading this article about the FNM holding a Convention before the next election, but there is a possibility it could be a “non-voting event”, I must admit to being quite confused.
In order to solve my dilemma I found my 1994 version of the Constitution of the Free National Movement and beginning on Page 16, Clause 48, it says, “A Party Convention shall be held at least once in every two years at such time and place as the Central Council shall appoint."
Clause 50 details what happens at a Convention, but sub clause (e) specifically states that “Election of officers of the Party” is to take place.
Now I realise the Constitution and these clauses could have been amended since 1994, but if they remain the same, I can only suggest, there is a bit of mischief making by all sides in this public party discussion.
One would think a party in opposition to the current administration would hold themselves to a higher standard and follow their own Constitution as the latter do not seem concerned about proper governance. So it seems a shoe in for an Opposition that displays maturity and follows the rule of law.
In the final, all the heat is irrelevant. Based on what I read there is no doubt there should be a Convention held by the FNM, and one of the objectives is to elect party officers.
