According to a report in The Tribune… the Atlantis Resort might have to reduce employment of entry level workers as a result the government's 40% hike in the minimum wage to $210 per week.
Apparently the Minister of Labour, Shane Gibson finds this "unfortunate".
Heck he even finds solace for his action by suggesting the National Tripartite Council (Government, Unions & The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce) was supported by none other than the Chamber of Commerce.
All that aside, it seems incumbent on the minister of labour to inform himself on the effect of public policies that hurt the very people he claims to be helping by his actions.
But maybe the "political brownie points" won't accrue if he told the truth about these policies?
We can believe in unicorns all we want. In fact, we can have one in any color we can dream up.
We can also convince ourselves minimum wage mandates work, but the facts prove otherwise.
In supporting this fantasy The Bahamas Chamber has put itself in a precarious position. Sure they might have been demonized by the Minister for telling the truth, but they would have been seen as honest participants by the community they represent.
