Funny thing about a law like VAT that removes due process of law and hands it to the bureaucrats that administer the law is, it forces the formation of a bureaucracy within a bureaucracy to prove the bureaucracy acted properly.
Confusing? Stick with me.
So a VAT appeal commission has been established to sugar coat the egregious act of removing due process of law, something that was held as sacred two or three decades ago for hundreds of years.
Due Process of Law was put in place by a 1368 Statute in England and was enshrined in The Bahamas Constitution in Chapter III, yet we have allowed the political class to, in effect, remove this important tenet from the law books.
So not only will the Bahamian taxpayer have to fund the VAT bureaucracy they will have to pay for a VAT appeal commission instead of using the court system that they pay for in the first place.
On top of everything else the report indicates a retired Supreme Court justice is the Chairman of the appeal commission.
This all seems to be at odds with the rule of law and the impartial administration of justice.
