In the Nassau Guardian recently… Mr. Perry Christie, Prime Minister, apparently "encourages greater UWI role in formation of public policy."
With all due respect, I'm not sure there are many, if any, academics at UWI that understand or wish to see a market economy blossom. Most of the policies I have seen them encourage is more socialist/collectivist policies that have helped get us in the mess we're in throughout the region.
If the PM is genuinely interested in policies that grow the economy, I would encourage him to travel to the Mercatus Center at George Mason University for some policies and ideas that bring more rewards to more people, rather that getting us mired down in policies that destroy wealth creation.
"The Mercatus Center at George Mason University is the world’s premier university source for market-oriented ideas—bridging the gap between academic ideas and real-world problems.
"A university-based research center, the Mercatus Center advances knowledge about how markets work to improve people’s lives by training graduate students, conducting research, and applying economics to offer solutions to society’s most pressing problems.
"Our mission is to generate knowledge and understanding of the institutions that affect the freedom to prosper, and to find sustainable solutions that overcome the barriers preventing individuals from living free, prosperous, and peaceful lives."
Alternatively, the policies I've seen promoted by UWI are opposite and promote CARICOM and other failed ideas.
Can anyone confirm or deny this? I would love to find out if there are any market oriented policies/academics at UWI.
