Now that the Parliamentary Select Committee has apologised to and confirmed no wrong doing by Cable & Wireless (CWC) the purchaser of the local phone company (BTC) after attempting to "pressure" them into giving the government majority shares again, they suggest the former administration "acted with great impropriety", according to The Bahama Journal (January 27, 2014).
So now they will attempt to stir the political pot with a "public inquiry" to show "They should not have sold BTC for what they did…in the terms that they did and in the manner that they did," claiming the sale to Cable & Wireless was "horrendous by any measure".
If something illegal was done legal action should be pursued forthwith, but if we are going to get another spectacle in the form of a "public inquiry", what purpose is served?
As far as I can determine, the government had the right to sell BTC with little or no public discussion, just as this government has the right to sell ZNS, Bahamas Air or BEC in a similar fashion. Which they probably will in spite of their protestations about BTC.
Having seen so many comments that BTC should have been sold only to Bahamians I can only speculate this is believed because BTC was one of the only profitable government corporations? In other words, why sell a potential goldmine to foreigners? I don't see folks clamouring to buy the other government "assets".
Reports are that government gets more revenue owning 49% of the firm today than they got when they owned 100%. Doesn't that tell you something?
As for the great deal the government worked out with their attempt to "take BTC back", CWC keeps 49.008%, the government keeps 49% and 1.992% is assigned to a new charitable trust with no change in management and board control. A far cry from taking BTC back, which was an unrealistic statement in the first place.
But after all this bad blood and political posturing, it's implied the government will create more drama with a public inquiry? Isn't there enough going on that is hurting Bahamians that the government should focus on those issues?
Like the image above shows, if you have easily adjustable goal posts, creating strife is part of the plan.
It's easy to stir the emotional pot as we can see from this BTC hyperbole. It's a different matter to show leadership and let this matter settle even if it might not serve one's political advantage.
There's already tremendous loss of goodwill all around. Unless they can file a lawsuit for theft or bribery or the like there is no need for more posturing if we really care about our country and her people.
