The brilliance of Pat Rahming's song The Politician notwithstanding, I don't understand the complaint that the only time people see a politician is when it's time to campaign for the next general election. My question is, so what?
The important thing is the voter should have an opportunity to read the propaganda the candidate and his or her party is distributing, and the potential candidate is available to see people if they have a desire to meet them.
When I lived in Canada I don't think we ever laid eyes on the politicians whether they were a local, provincial or national candidate. Potential voters were inundated with flyers and brochures though.
I'm reminded of this column I wrote more than a decade ago.
It's curious why we are still even bothered by the fact that the candidate or MP does not visit us in our neighbourhood. Is it we simply want them to tell us what we want to hear as the image above says?
What do you think?
