I think the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) crowd are protesting at the wrong door and about the wrong thing. They should take their protest to the White House and Congress.
It's Crony Capitalism they should be protesting, where business people and elected officials use the public treasury as if it belongs to them. Capitalism is a profit and loss system, where businesses fail and succeed. And this is not to be confused with what the Bush and Obama administrations did with the bailouts of of the financial industry.
Mind you, they (the political class) might have felt obligated as it was government prompting that caused the bad mortgages in the first place.
But I digress.
Capitalism, is described by the Routledge Dictionary of Economics as being:
- A socioeconomic system of production using roundabout methods of production (Bohm-Bawerk's capital theory).
- An economy based on private enterprise.
- The use of markets and not planning to allocate economic resources.
- Production motivated by the profit motive.
Nowhere in that description do I see private/government partnership or collusion to keep each other afloat at the expense of the taxpayer.
In addition, Capitalism is the very system that has provided the OWS crowd with the tools they're using to disrupt the economy.
Destroying Capitalism will no doubt have an even more deleterious impact on the lifestyle of the OWS crowd as well as the rest of us.
As noted, I think they're knocking at the wrong door.
