Rick Lowe
Dr. Sophia Rolle had an obviously heart felt letter to the Editor of The Tribune on Wednesday December 9, 2009 in which she made many suggestions on how the government should help authentically Bahamian crafts people.
While she presented some good ideas, I question why the government has to implement them?
Surely they can hire someone to implement her ideas themselves, or form their own association to do so?
It is most unfair that the government should decide to spend taxpayer money on people that are capable of making the event happen themselves.
The New Famous Nassau Straw Market
This brings me to another unfortunate situation. The government has announced they're going to spend almost $12 million on a new straw market for some 500 vendors.
Don't get me wrong, $12 million is a helluva lot less than the $20 plus million the former government (PLP) was going to spend, but it's ridiculous that any government should spend money from all Bahamian taxpayers on a small group of people who are obviously capable of an investment to carry out their business themselves.
At this stage our development we should be asking government to get out of the way of our profit making enterprises, but no, it seems as if we want to be lap dogs for the political class to take more of our money.
How many projects have been designed to "help" infant industries that have never been stopped?
It's strange that we do not learn from history.
