I've been having a discussion of sorts with a gentleman at this post... over at The Nassau Institute.
The gist of his argument is the white people put a system in place that has protected them and their money making ever since. In addition, it seems the system was designed to keep the black Bahamian disadvantaged and our imperial educational system teaches inferiority.
Of course the UBP, and more specifically Sir Roland Symonette is cast as a villain and the PLP, in the form of Sir Lynden Pindling is cast as the saint.
At the end of it all, I'm somehow meant to feel guilty and make apologies because I know Brent Symonette who the respondent says should bring all Bahamians "together and admit the ills of Bay Street and Paradise Island/Sun Int'l racism, like Sir Durward Knowles did!!"
I'm not sure how Brent Symonette apologising for the transgressions will do any more to lift Bahamians out of their personal difficulties, than the siblings of Sir Lynden Pindling doing the same for his political ills.
Personally I don't think we need apologies from any of the political class. What we do need to do however, is hold their feet to the fire to improve education and stop the gigantic waste of government leading to debt levels future generations might never be able repay.
Is hamstringing all Bahamians, black or white, to a failed state, where citizens are no longer self reliant, but beholden to their MP, as bad as the ills of the UBP of 41 years ago?
We should never forget whatever ills the respondent thinks the white people are responsible for, but we all need to take responsibility for ourselves and our families.
With a goal of self improvement, pretty soon we all forget the bad things someone might have done to us or our family 40 for 50 years ago, and get along and get on with life.
