Over the weekend I had posted an entry to appear this morning, but when I read the Insight section of The Tribune on Monday I had to write something about this most tragic situation.
The report indicates that Mario Miller, son of former PLP Cabinet Minister, Leslie Miller, was brutally murdered in his car six years ago and discarded in the grass "alongside a superstore parking lot".
Allegations are that only two suspects, "instead of at least five" were eventually charged with Mario's murder as a result of the Attorney General's office directive that the police not prosecute.
Of course, Leslie Miller and your not so humble blogger cannot shoot nicker's together as we say, so I had dismissed his comments about this situation over the years. But when his allegations are considered in view of the recent revelations by former police prosecutor, Keith Bell, it is time for the country to sit up and take notice, if they had not done so before.
If the justice system is not put on life support pretty soon, I'm afraid the sky will fall as some have been predicting.
Even though it is somewhat ironic, Mr. Miller has put his "final bid in for closure" to the FNM, and one hopes that the evidence is there so that charges can proceed and Mr. Miller can feel some comfort that justice has been served.
No one deserves to be murdered, but surely when a life is taken the integrity of our justice system must be beyond reproach.
I was touched by Mr Miller's story and this blog is my tear, so to speak, for the grief he and his family must feel. But it is also an attempt to urge our faithful readers to write letters to our Members of Parliament and Cabinet Members demanding that they place the necessary emphasis on ensuring the resources are in place for the Police and the Courts to do their jobs, without fear or favour. I commit to do the same.
Mr. Miller is facing this tragedy today. Who among us will face it tomorrow if nothing is done?
