Every day the press is reporting either a rape, stabbing, murder, robbery, shooting or a combination of two or more of these crimes. The country has become paralyzed with fear.
Now we learn that a policeman (a member of that body that has sworn to protect and defend us) has been arrested and charged with accepting a bribe for aiding in the release of a convicted drug dealer. We have also learned that the Press was denied access to the court to witness the arraignment and that he was brought in unshackled.
I would suggest that if convicted, he should be shackled, placed in a glass cage dressed in sackcloth and ashes and put on display in Rawson Square. On second thought, that will probably be challenged by his lawyer and the Court of Appeal will dismiss it because it will be considered "cruel and inhumane treatment."
Can we even dare to hope that Government will soon recognize the need to make the punishments fit the crimes or shall we continue to slide down the slippery slope toward total anarchy?
