When Dr. Donald Boudreuax was here in The Bahamas for his Nassau Institute lecture on Globalization he asked me what caused me choose the "Freedom Philosophy".
Frankly it was not something I had ever thought about. It seemed my natural inclination toward scepticism of the political class.
It could also have something to do with growing up under a government that had become so bereft of ideas and facing allegations of corruption almost monthly.
Even so, I had worked in political campaigns from 1982 through 2002 and actually served on the Central Council of one of the local political parties.
In talking this through with him, I settled on the fact my family was originally from the family islands, Abaco and Eleuthera, (I actually lived in Marsh Harbour, Abaco for three years as a youngster) where the tentacles of government did not reach so well back in the late 1960's, and people fended for themselves.
What is the Freedom Philosophy?
While reading Mr. Lawrence Reed's, Striking The Root recently I came upon a nice and neat explanation.
Mr. Reed says liberty is:
...a civil society in which people both preach and practice respect for life and property. It means we each mend our own ways and mind our own business. It means we rely on upon voluntary association and individual compassion, not coercive arrangements and political redistribution. It means minimal government and maximum self-reliance. And when we get there, the battle of ideas will not be over because people, being less than perfect, can always unlearn the truths they've learned.
So I concluded with Dr. Boudreaux that these are the reasons I help spread the ideas of liberty and the freedom philosophy.
