Political conventions tend to be quite trivial in our country, and serve little more than a soapbox. And the PLP convention that started last night, February 20, 2008, is no different.
Very few of the speakers offered any tangible ideas or policies on how to improve the country. In fact, some speakers still attempted to make people believe that the white oligarchy still controls The Bahamas.
Those speakers that dared offer ideas for change were met with stone cold silence from the audience. While the presenters that offered rhetoric seemed to gain the approbation of the crowd.
Listening to several of the speakers, one would not think that PLP governed the country for some 30 years - 1967 to 1992 and then 2002 to 2005.
Sometimes we need to free ourselves from mental slavery as Bob Marley sang.
As an American economist recently asked while reviewing the US electoral process, and it seems quite appropriate in our circumstances sometimes - "Can I buy a political prophylactic?"
