I know, it's dangerous for me to do too much thinking, but at The Nassau Institute's monthly discussion group series last Thursday, October 25, 2007 the conversation inevitably turned to our crime problem.
One of the causes suggested is the fact that we have no family structure anymore. And I recalled when single mothers on New Providence would send their children to live with her parents on the islands to "grow them up" as we would say.
Now we find that generation of grand parents has left the scene and children do not have that moral compass to help guide them any longer.
While this might be reaching I suggested that our moral decay is exacerbated as a result of the loss of those grand parents.
Are there any anthropologists out there that would have a comment on this?
Following is a comparison of crime for 2006 vs 2007, from January 1 thorugh through September 30 each year, that was printed in the The Nassau Guardian several days ago. It should make us all sit up and take notice.
