It was reported in The Tribune on August 21, 2007 that a number of parents whose children are students at University in Jamaica are most upset because our Government did not fly a plane or planes to Jamaica to bring their children home and "out of harms way".
No, I do not have a child at University in Jamaica so no, I cannot say that I know exactly how they feel. If however, I did have a child there I most certainly would not expect my government to send a plane down there to bring my child home.
I would make sure, before letting my child register at any University, that they can assure me that they (the University) has put in place emergency plans, so that I could comfortably feel that they would be kept "out of harms way". In the case of Jamaica, which has experienced hurricanes in the past, I personally cannot believe that they would not take every precaution to see that their students will be safe.
I feel that this is just another case of Bahamians not knowing where their own responsibilities end and the Government's responsibility begins or vice versa.
