After a short drive on Shirley street from Ft. Montagu to Collins Avenue I have to wonder what formula the Ministry of works uses to determine when they should send a crew to fix the potholes that we have to endure on a daily basis. Do the potholes have to be six inches in depth, 12 inches, 18 inches? Or, is it decided on the basis of the number of broken axles and blown tires? After a longer drive I have to wonder what percentage of traffic lights are working on the island. Is the decision to get them working based on how many accidents are the result of their malfunction or is it the number of lives lost? Perhaps no one really knows. Perhaps that is why they are referred to as the Misery of Works and Futilities.
Never mind, that will all seem so insignificant after this Government shows the rest of the world how to provide comprehensive health care without the expense of unnecessary infrastructure and adminstrative costs. The rest of the world will be in awe but then, why should they be? After all, we have demonstrated how efficient we were in managing hotels, how a Government should subsidize an airline, how a telecommunication company can survive just by selling its products without the expense of keeping them working. I could go on boasting, but you get the point. They are so good that we have to wonder why they don't just become a nanny government and run our lives for us, or is that what they have in mind? Perhaps they can use the Castro model.
