This term evolved out of the Marxist and Freudian philosophies of the 1930s to become a tool for multiculturalism, multisexualism, multitheism, and multianythingism. It has gone far beyond its original aim to discourage bias and prejudiced thinking that discriminates against an individual or group. It has evolved into something that is both scary and foolish.
Anytime anyone voices a contrary opinion to the mainstream thinking they are immeditely given a disparaging label - a racist, a bigot, unpatriotic, homophobic and the list goes on. Since so many people don't like to be tagged with a label, the result is that those who want to speak up about a social, political or academic subject will usually be quiet and suffer their opinions in silence.
This is dangerous because when people are forced into silence through the fear of being labelled we are then on a slippery slope toward a totalitarian state. The United States and Great Britain are on this dangerous course for trying to be so politiically correct with immigration and particularly with the treatment of Mexicans and Muslims. I would urge everyone to read the book "Londonistan" by Melanie Phillips which addresses this issue with authority.
Here in the Bahamas we have politicians, and even the clergy using the political correctness tool to label anyone who disagrees with their policies. We are unpatriotic, uncaring and even spiritually immature, according to those who would like to silence us.
The time to stop this nonsense is now and we must urge Bahamians to ignore the labels and speak out against those who try to make us forget our constitutional rights through fear and the over-worked idea of being politically correct.
