We understand the Standards Act and Consumer Protection Legislation will be up for debate in the Senate and the House of Assembly respectively next week.
While we know the Senate is little more than a rubber stamp, if enough of them stand opposed to the legislation based on the concerns raised by the business community, the government might be inclined to take a second look at this proposed Bill.
Likewise, we sincerely hope the Members of the House of Assembly will also consider the body of work prepared by the business sector on the Consumer Protection Act.
The points raised by the business community that have all but been ignored by the Minister proposing these Bills can be found on the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce web site at this link: The Bahamas Chamber.com.
If you know a Member of Parliament or Senator, please call them and ask that they consider the information provided by various non-governmental organisations through the Chamber.
It is so discouraging when governments come to power saying they will consult with other ‘stakeholders’ in the community with new legislation and then basically tell them to piss off when they offer constructive feedback.
However, I have been told, it is better to be pissed off than to be pissed on.
