Why do we spend $149 million on each Defense Force boat, if the 100,000.00 plus square miles of Bahamian waters could perhaps be covered more efficiently, safely and with less cost, by drones?
If we are going to allow immigrants to land here, (and that is what is happening), they are entitled to the protections offered by the Constitution. And only the Courts can determine whether the operations of the Executive Branch of Government are constitutional.
So it seems to me that either the Government invests in drones, and operates an effective interdiction of immigrants, or we get ready to invest much more in the judicial system to allow those landed their day in court, and consequential damages and cost orders which again, the Bahamian people will pay for. And if we are committed to a stable and safe constitutional democracy, we must be willing to pay for that.
We need to see the political will to deal with the reduction or prevention of mass illegal immigration on the one hand, and the willingness to respect constitutional protections for the individual on the other. Would this be the way forward for a responsible, accountable, transparent government under the rule of law, on an urgent basis?
